A singer building water plant

In 10 July 2008, the first brackist water processing plant in Hochiminh City will start the operations. The owner of this plant is the one who has been awarded for the 1991 Television Voice First Prize and is well-known by many customers: Singer Dong Dao.

 

 
Dream has come true
Dong Dao now is the Chairman of Board of Directors cum General Director for Dang Doan Nguyen Joint Stock Company, investor of the Can Gio Freshwater Plant project (Tam Thon Hiep Commune, Can Gio Town, Hochiminh City). Question why a singer builds a water plant, a brackist water processing plant_thing has ever been done in a redundant salt-water region like Can Gio, Dong Dao confides:
“10 years ago, I often go on tour to serve poor people in Can Gio and witness people here catching every bucket of rain-water for cooking. When fellows in my group need water to bathe preparing for the show, Alas! The water container behind this guesthouse is only dregs left. A thought has gone through to my mind: I wish I could do something to help people here in cutting down their difficulties in finding daily-activities water source.”

And with the support from her husband_Mr. Danny Dang, Dong Dao’s dream has come true after over 10 years. She said: “ In 2005, the city committee enforces Decree 141 calling private individuals investing in supplying-freshwater field in order to solve city urgent demand of freshwater.  At the same time, my husband’s company has been offically representative for Severn Trent_a world-famous corporation major in water processing. Seizing this opportunity, I choose Can Gio for the first place building the water plant. I’m so nervous in the first time since nobody has done this before in Vietnam, although people has already processed salt-water  into freshwater in the world. Then, concern that people won’t believed I could do it…”

But she decides to do it. This singer has trampped many regions of Can Gio for practical surveys. Going to Soai Rap River to get water sample for testing, result shows unsatisfactorily due to pollutions from industrial zones and garbage. Switch to Nha Be River, considerring it’s not suitable for the supplying progress. Lastly, Long Tau River is the place Dong Dao chooses to build the plant. When starting the building, her company has to import a mini water plant with capacity of 300 m3/day supplying for the building progress.  
 
Turning brackish water into freshwater
This plant in the first stage has the capacity of 5,300 m3/day and will increase this number up to 10,300 m3/day in the second stage after 9-12 months later. There’s also the line producing drinkingwater bottles and containers, capacity/hour: 6,000 bottles and 200 containers. This August, equipments for bottling plant will be on board from the US to Vietnam and start the operations in September.  Total value of the brackishwater plant is 8.5 million and the bottling plant 1 million US dollars.
Dong Dao says that plant’s water filter, under the reverse osmosis tech. (R.O), removes all harmful bacteria and even can filter salt-water.  Long Tau River, Saigon and Dong Nai River conjunction to the ocean, has a plentiful source of water and is less polluted than others. Furthermore, it’s convenient to transport freshwater throughout communes because most of Can Gio water-supplying systems are by lighters.
Cutting down the Can Gio water price
Mr. Dang Van Thien, Director of Can Gio Public Benefit Service Company_ the freshwater transport unit supplying for all town says:
 “ Until now, freshwater has been transporting a distance of 20-27 kms by lighters from Tan Thuan (district 7) to people here. Each trip sometimes takes up to 16-18 hours. So, in average the government have to support 23,000 dongs of transport expenditures for every m3 carried from district 7 to Can Gio. In 2007, Hochiminh City supported 33 billion dongs of water transport expenditures for Can Gio. This year, it’s estimated that Can Gio will spend 1.8 million m3 and the price go down from the current 5,000 dongs/m3 to 2,700 dongs. This means that the total transport support will up to 50 billion.”

He also says Can Gio Water Plant will make the source of freshwater on the spot, cut down the transport expenses and supplement the city’s source of water in dry season.  
Dong Dao explains the water price her company has offered is 15,400 dongs/m3 including transport expenditures. According to Hochiminh City’s policy calling socializing water supply, the money of assets amortization appears from loan stock  company has invested will be amortized as per the lending term for this project. As a result, with the above water price, the city will just only continue to support the transport expenses for more 5 years. Then after finishing setlement of account, the plant will charge the same price as the city.
