"Sweeten" the Can Gio coastal area

As a coastal in the east of Hochiminh City, Can Gio is seperated with the urban area by Nha Be River, rather wide. For this reason, with the people in this salt-marsh area, freshwater has been “rear article”.

Freshwater thirst
Can Gio Social Services Company says they have to go 20-72 kms waterway to buy freshwater in district 2 and 7, then distribute to citizens in town through the local water-pipe system. Long distance together with riverway transportation takes 18 hours for water lighters to arrive. In the stressful lack-of-freshwater period in Hochiminh City, many lighters have to queue up for water and sometimes it takes 2-3 days for them to get back to Can Gio. One day late is one day people here are thirsty. Tran Van Xem _ a citizen at Binh Phuoc Village, Binh Khanh Commune_ says: “ It’s getting better now, but not in the day before. My family had to wait a week long for merchants carrying every single water boat to sell here. Who came in late had to wait until the week after. Called freshwater but pumped up from wells. Not sure if they’re in good quality or not.”
Can Gio Committee has just submitted a statement adjusting the water price and norm for its people to the Financial Department.
According to the statement, the water price for daily activities will be adjusted from 5,000 dongs/m3 to 2,700 dongs/m3; production from 7,300 dongs to 5,400 dongs/m3; services from 9,800 dongs/m3 to 8,000 dongs/m3 and administrative organizations 6,000 dongs/m3.
Meanwhile, propose to adjust the norm to be the same as in the city. |
According to Mr. Huynh Van Son, officer responsible for front mission in Binh Trung Village, there’s a time the people here don’t have freshwater for month. Many families can’t stand it then they have to deposit every single water can taking from Nha Be River for temporary using.
Besides being lack-of-water, can gio people have to buy water with high price: 5,000 dongs/m3 for activities, 7,300 dongs/m3 for production and 9,800 dongs/m3 for services business. These are all higher than the ones people in the city should pay.
Investing because they understand people’s suffer
Seperated terrain, surface and underground water sources are not advantageous to process water. That’s why there hasn’t been any organization intending to build water plant in Can Gio though years.
It’s thought that “sweeten the salt-marsh area” is a asbstract dream, but it suddenly become true. Dang Doan Nguyen Joint Stock Company has chosen Tam Thon Hiep Commmune the place to build a brackist water processing plant in amzement of the local authorities. After one year of building, in July 10, this plant is going to supply the first draughts to the people here.
One thing interesting is that the company’s Chairman of Board of Directors is the singer who has won the 1991 Television Voice First Prize: Nguyen Thuy Dong Dao. When we ask her why choosing Can Gio to invest, Dong Dao says: “In 1991, I together with the Military Zone 7 went on tour in Can Gio. It took one day to arrive there. We were all exhausted and needed water to take a shower. A man of the town guesthouse led us to a dry-to-bottom water container and say: “Freshwater is very rear. We can only buy once a week.” At that time, I think: “Even government agency doesn’t have water then its people must have a lot of suffers.”
Understanding the disadvantage of the people here but the idea of helping them to get more freshwater has just gone through to her mind. Until getting married and she switches to do business, the idea of “sweeten this salt-marsh region” has a chance to be done. After the plant goes smoothly, Dang Doan Nguyen will carry on the second stage, increase the output more 5,000 m3/day, as well as invest a production line producing drinking water. Total invest for this project is 9 million US dollars.
Mr. Dang Van Thien, Director of Can Gio Social Services Company, asserts that if this plant starts the operations, it will help to solve troubles in transporting freshwater as well as the price support. As per year-end statistics in 2007, the city has to support 33 billion dongs of transport expenditures for Can Gio. It’s estimated that this area will spend 1.8 million m3 in 2008. “ With the current water price, we estimate that the money our city has to support will go up to 50 billion dongs. However, if the water plant starts the operations, the distance transporting water will decrease by 1/3 and the price support do the same thing.”
Many households near this plant palpitate with the hope to drink the fisrt drops directly processed from this salt-marsh area Can Gio.
