Lack-of-freshwater suffer
Coming to Can Gio, it’s easy to see that water jars are in front of every parthouse here. Rich people will build water container or plastic tank of 500-1,000 liters while less money ones use water jar of 100-120 liters. The supplier let the water out once or twice everyday for them to catch. In rainy season, these jars will be used to catch rainwater added to source of water, “rare article” for years in this place.
Pham Van Ut, living in An Loc Village, Tam Thon Hiep Commmune says that his family has 3 water jars. The day he catches full of them, it will be enough for a family of husband and wife and a 2-year-old baby. That’s when supplier has water to let out, if not it’s impossible. Although the supplier fix the letting out is in early morning but due to the water source, the time is unpredictable. Sometimes it’s in 5 am, sometimes 7 and even in midnight, etc. That’s why sometimes they keep an eye for nothing. He and his wife has to take turns to keeping an eye on the water.
Although having a lot of troubles, his family still get water, but not Huynh Van Dong, Doi Lau Village, An Thoi Dong Commune. He says the people in his village haven’t had freshwater for a year long. He also explains to them the supplier inform that the water pipe system gets loss of water, so they have to stop the supply for fixing. Then, these pipes line still to dry in their waiting. In order to have water for their daily activities, many people have to buy from private companies with 30,000 to 40,000 dongs/m3 and even not available sometimes.
Mr. Doan Van Son, the vice chairman of Can Gio Committee says that Can Gio people need 6,000 m3/day for daily activities. Hoever, it’s hard to find the water source here because water has to be transported 20 kms to here from district 2 and 7 by riverway.
Turning brackist water to freshwater
At the end of this July, Can Gio Brackist Water Processing Plant at Tran Hung Dao Village, Tan Thoi Hiep Commune will start the operations and supply to the whole town. Ms. Nguyen Thuy Dong Dao, the Dang Doan Nguyen Joint Stock Company’s Chairman of Board or Directors cum General Director (project investor), says this plant is going to use water from Long Tau River then processing it by reverse osmosis equipment imported from the US. This is modern water filtering tech. in the world that can remove saltwater and harmful bacteria. According to her, processed water form the plant has been tested by Hochiminh City Biochemical Analyzing And Testing Institute. Result shows standards of PH degree, salinity and other figures get the Medical Ministry’s quality standard.
This plant in the first stage has the capacity of 5,300 m3/day and will increase this number up to 10,000 m3/day in the second stage in April 2009. The production will be all sold for Can Gio Social Services Company distributing to the people here. The price offered is currently 15,498 gonds/m3 including 2,700 dongs for water and transport expenditures 27 kms from district 7 to Tam Thon Hiep Commune with 474 dongs/m3. With this price, she asserts the city will only giev price support for more 5 years, then when finising the loan, this price will be the same as in the urban, 2,700 dongs/m3. In fact, people in Can Gio have to pay 5,000 dongs/m3 and the city 20,000 dongs. Mr. Son tells us that the city has to support 33 billion dongs for 1.6 million m3 used in Can Gio in 2007. In 2008, water price in daily activities has just presented to city committee 2,700 dongs/m3 (same as in the city), then we have to support an estimated of 50 billions dongs for 1.8 million m3.
Mr. Son assures that with capacity of 5,300 m3.day in this period, the plant will meet 80% of water demand. In 2011, if putting up the capacity to 20,000 m3/day, the plant will satisfy all the demand as well as decreasing hard pressure of unable in water source. To Can Gio people, most of them are waiting for the plant’s operations to help them get out of what they’ve been suffered.
